Summer House, Sweden

Set amongst the rocky landscape and pine forests of Stora Timrarö island in the Stockholm Archipelago, this contemporary summer house is designed to create a close connection with its natural surroundings. The architecture responds sensitively to the island’s rugged terrain, with the house opening towards the surrounding landscape and sea.

Designed by Studio RAM, the summer house combines clean, understated architecture with a carefully selected palette of natural materials. Timber is central to the design, allowing the building to blend naturally into the characteristic Scandinavian landscape while creating a warm and tactile expression.

For the façade, Ekland Wood supplied Thermo Clear Pine, chosen for its natural appearance, stability and durability. Under the roof soffits, Thermo Spruce with a Shou Sugi Ban effect creates a darker, more contrasting surface, adding depth and definition to the architecture.

Accoya wood decking extends the living spaces outdoors, creating a durable connection between the house and its surrounding landscape. Inside the sauna, Thermo Aspen provides a warm, natural finish suited to the calm atmosphere of the space.

Together, the different timber species and finishes create a restrained material palette that complements both the architecture and the rugged character of Stora Timrarö.
