A Summer Retreat in the Stockholm Archipelago

LB House, Stora Timrarö, Sweden

Set on the small island of Timrarö in the northern Stockholm archipelago, LB House is a contemporary summer residence designed as a quiet retreat from urban life. Surrounded by pine trees, granite outcrops, heather and expansive views across the water, the house is carefully integrated into the distinctive landscape of the Swedish archipelago.

Another gem from Studio RAM’s feather – designed for a Stockholm-based couple, the villa was conceived not as an object dominating its surroundings, but as a calm and carefully composed place from which to experience them. The architecture sits low amongst the natural terrain, opening towards the sea while remaining sheltered by the island’s pine forest and rocky landscape.

Large areas of glazing and precisely positioned openings frame views towards the water, horizon and sky. Throughout the house, the changing Nordic light and the surrounding landscape become an integral part of the interior experience. Sliding doors and generous outdoor spaces further blur the boundary between inside and outside, allowing the house to open directly onto the rocks and surrounding nature during the summer months.

Ekland Wood supplied Thermo Clear Pine for the main façade. The natural appearance of the timber complements the tones of the surrounding pine forest and granite landscape, while thermally modified wood provides the dimensional stability and durability required for the demanding Scandinavian climate.

A darker timber finish was introduced beneath the roof soffits, where Thermo Spruce with a Shou Sugi Ban effect creates contrast and depth within the architectural composition. The darker surfaces help define the building’s volumes while complementing the natural palette of the exterior.

The connection between the house and the landscape continues through the outdoor areas, where Accoya wood decking extends the living spaces towards the surrounding rocks and views across the archipelago. Inside, Thermo Aspen was used in the sauna, adding a warm and tactile natural material to one of the home’s most intimate spaces.

LB House is a contemporary interpretation of the Scandinavian summer home: a place for gathering, cooking, swimming and spending time outdoors, while also providing a peaceful retreat surrounded by rock, forest and water.
