Perched on the edge of a quiet peninsula just outside Stockholm, this remarkable private residence embraces the Scandinavian landscape with understated confidence. Surrounded by water, pine trees and the ever-changing Nordic seasons, Villa N demonstrates how architecture can become an extension of its environment rather than an interruption of it.

Designed by Studio RAM, the home was created for a family seeking a slower, more nature-oriented lifestyle. Strict planning regulations challenged the architects to think creatively, resulting in a composition that feels both expansive and intimate. Long horizontal lines, generous glazing and a continuous balcony create a seamless dialogue between the interior and the surrounding landscape, allowing every space to stay connected to the water, the sky and the changing seasons.

Material selection played a defining role in bringing this vision to life. The exterior is clad in Ekland Wood’s thermo treated clear pine, chosen for its clean appearance, exceptional durability and elegant grain pattern.

The warm timber façade complements the natural surroundings while creating a refined architectural expression that is unmistakably Scandinavian. The owners chose to treat the façade with UV-protective oil in order to maintain its beautiful natural brown hue.

Beyond the main residence, Ekland Wood also supplied the same clear pine cladding for the guest house, thermo ash decking boards for the balconies and bespoke sauna interior from thermo aspen. Using the same carefully selected timber throughout the project creates visual continuity while reinforcing the connection between architecture and nature.

Rather than competing with its spectacular setting, the house frames it.

Floor-to-ceiling windows invite daylight deep into the interior, while carefully positioned terraces offer different experiences throughout the day – from quiet morning coffee overlooking the water to long summer evenings spent outdoors with family and friends.

The property’s collection of buildings – the main villa, guest house, sauna and studio – forms a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Scandinavian homestead.

Great architecture is about more than just appearance. It is about creating places that continue to feel relevant year after year.

Thermally modified timber offers outstanding dimensional stability and durability without the need for chemical treatment, making it an ideal choice for demanding Nordic climate. Its resistance to moisture and changing weather conditions ensures that the façade will continue to perform beautifully while requiring minimal maintenance.

This project perfectly illustrates the philosophy shared by Studio RAM and Ekland Wood: when architecture, materials and landscape are considered as one, the outcome is more than a beautiful house – it becomes a place that feels naturally rooted in its surroundings.
